Onyx is made up of calcite, which is also found in limestone, marble, and travertine. It forms when spring water or groundwater has an excess of calcite dissolved in it. Similar to onyx, travertine is formed in the same manner, but with a porous, lace-like texture. The main difference between travertine and onyx is their texture, with travertine being porous and onyx being smooth and non-porous.
